NEWS:

The Swedesboro Branch of the Gloucester County Library System was awarded a Local History grant from the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission. The funds were provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission.

The Swedesboro Library offered three public programs focusing on the history of the area now known as Swedesboro.

Kevin Brady of the American Institute for History Education will presented a talk, “Sweden During the Time of Exploration”.

“Memories of Life in New Sweden”. Aleasa Hogate of the New Sweden Centre performed as her ancestor, Elisabeth Dalbo, who lived in Raccoon (Swedesboro) in the 17th century.

Dr. Kim-Eric Williams, Swedish Colonial Society Historian, discussed “Culture, Heritage, and Genealogy of New Sweden Colonists”.

All programs were free and open to the public.

These programs were made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of the State, and the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission at Gloucester County College.

Swedesboro Public Library has been serving residents of the community since it was established in 1783, making it one of the oldest libraries in the state. Incorporated in 1937, the library was originally housed in Borough Hall but relocated across Kings Highway to a historic bank building in 1944. Swedesboro Public Library has been a proud member of the Gloucester County Library System since 2005.

The Library was nationally recognized by the American Library Association for “Reuse and Restoration” during its recent $1.2 million renovation and expansion, which equipped the historic building with a new meeting room, a modern HVAC system, a handicap accessible entrance and much more. Today, the library offers programs for children and adults, including story times and book discussions, free wireless internet access, public use of computers, and free fax and notary services. Borrowing policies range from three days for videos to two weeks for books, magazines, CDs, audiobooks and playaways. Interlibrary loans are offered by Gloucester County Library System.
