The name Okinawa Kenpo Karate is no coincidence. Deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, the studio’s name harkens to a very specific form of martial arts known as Okinawan Karate, a type of karate that developed on the island of Okinawa, Japan.
In the 1950s, longtime scholar of Okinawan Karate, Master Shigeru Nakamura, established a dojo in Nago City, Japan. Master Nakamura dubbed his variant of the art form Okinawa Kenpo Karate, and would later establish the dojo of Okinawa Kenpo Renmei in partnership with Master Zenryo Shimabuku in 1953.
Upon the death of Master Nakamura, a new Master of Okinawa Kenpo Karate was appointed: Seikichi Odo. It was with Master Odo in Japan that Brian DeGori trained intensely, immersing himself in the study of authentic Okinawa Kenpo. Upon his return to the United States, Master DeGori launched Okinawa Kenpo Karate in Pitman, New Jersey in 1995, and to this day the studio maintains its dedication to the traditional roots of the art form.
Since the studio opened its doors in Pitman, Okinawa Kenpo Karate has since expanded to offer lessons in Swedesboro, West Deptford, and Mullica Hill. Offering services for students from age 2.5 years on up, the Swedesboro location features instruction in karate, Pilates, tai chi, krav maga, and capoeira. The studio caters to all abilities and skill levels, and its central focus lies in teaching respect for others, discipline, and self-confidence.
The school offers basic programs in self-defense, as well as kata, leadership, and safety sparring, and even conducts appearances at seminars. Okinawa Kenpo Karate even offers packages for karate birthday parties, a great alternative for those looking to celebrate with a fun martial arts twist.
