BBQ Dinner to Benefit Richardson Avenue School

There will be a BBQ Dinner sale (food by Jersey-Q Barbecue) from Historical and Educational Lodge-Hall Preservatory (HELP), to benefit the Richardson Avenue School & Mount Zion AME Church Preservation on Saturday August 16th from noon to 5pm.

Cost is $15 and the sale will take place at the Richardson Avenue School on the corner of 2nd Street and Richardson Avenue in Swedesboro.

The Richardson Avenue School was constructed in 1931 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, one of four such buildings designated as such in Swedesboro.  The Richardson Avenue School was the last separate-but-equal school in New Jersey and it served the African American population in Swedesboro until 1942.  Constructed for the Mt. Lebanon Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, the structure over the years has housed many cultural and social activities for the African American community.  The Lodge Hall was not maintained for many years, until a local group organized the Historical and Educational Lodge-Hall Preservatory (HELP) to dedicate its resources to the building’s restoration and interpretation.
“This is an important part of the history of our town and there will be a number of people there on Saturday who attended the school.  The stories and successes of the students who attended this school are amazing and I encourage you to learn more about this historic landmark – and to help continue the preservation of the building,” said Mayor Tom Fromm.

Free Kayaking events a huge hit this summer!

Swedesboro Lake Park, situated on Lake Narraticon, played host to two hugely popular kayaking events this summer.  The kayaking events which are sponsored by S/W Environmental Commission and Municipal Alliance work in conjunction with Splash & Paddle, a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to teaching people about kayaking, canoeing and water safety.

Splash & Paddle and other volunteers bring dozens of kayaks, canoes and life vests to the lake for a full day of paddling around for anyone that wants to give it a try!

The two events held in July and August averaged around 300 participants from all around South Jersey.

It wasn’t all boating on the water, however. The event also included a lot of backyard fun to enjoy while waiting or taking a break from kayaking. Participants could have some fun with bubbles and water guns, bean bag toss games or chow down on some hot dogs and hamburgers from Logan Lunchbox.

This August, the event introduced a new portion to a great day at the lake. South Jersey Fly Fishers set up to teach people about fly fishing and offer them an opportunity to tie and cast a fly!
