Requirements for entering into a marriage

            The following criteria must be met before two people can enter into a marriage

1. Not be a party to another civil union, domestic partnership or marriage in this state or recognized by this state,
2. Be at least 18 years old

Where to Apply for a Marriage License

            Apply with the Registrar of the town where either party currently resides. Please call municipality for times and locations. If neither party resides in New Jersey but wish to have the ceremony here, apply in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.

Required documents when applying for a Marriage License or Civil Union License

1. Proof of Identity by presenting your drivers license, passport or state/federal I.D.
2. Proof of residency by one applicant if a NJ resident
3. Social Security Number
4. A witness
5. $28.00 application fee (check or cash only)

Requesting a Domestic Partnership

            Both partners must appear together and fill out an affidavit of domestic partnership, which must be signed in the presence of a notary public. You may take this with you and have it notarized or the registrar can notarize it. Return it to the Registrar with all of the proof required and the registrar will turn it into the state.

Who can Register for a Domestic Partnership

            Any couple of the same or opposite sex and aged 62 years or older, that meet the following criteria.
1. Share a common residence
2. Live in the State of NJ or are a member in a State of New Jersey administered retirement system.
3. Are jointly responsible for each others common welfare as evidenced by one of the items listed in the proof requirements section.
4. Agree to be jointly responsible for each other’s basic living expenses during the partnership.
5. Are unrelated to each other by blood or marriage up to and including the fourth degree of consanguinity.
6. Neither partner is currently in a marriage recognized by the New Jersey law.
7. Neither party is currently in an existing domestic partnership.
8. It has been more than 180 days since the termination of any previous domestic partnership that either partner was in (except in case of death of a partner)

Requesting a Vital Record

          Anyone wishing to obtain a certified copy of a vital record must be the person to whom the information pertains or a direct relation such as parent, child, sibling, grandchild or other legal guardian. They must also show proof of identification and must fill out and sign a record request form at the clerks office.
