Band Bio:
Franny Smith – a legend to the Philadelphia area as well as in Atlantic City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and Wildwood. Franny has literally played his banjo all over the world! Back in the 70’s, he played at the Bulls Head Inn, currently known as Charlie Browns, in Woodbury, NJ, for approximately 8-10 years with keyboardist, Doug Knight. Franny leads the way with his singing and banjo playing.
Chuck Harms – plays drums, banjo and bass guitar. New Orleans Jazz has provided him with most of his gigs, although for the last year and a half he has been playing with the Bubba Mac Blues Band, a popular SJ shore band. Playing different styles of music on completely different instruments, automatically improves your overall skills. It’s a fascinating experience to get better on one instrument while playing another!
Robert Rawlins – is professor and coordinator of music theory in the Department of Music at Rowan University. In addition to a Ph.D. in Musicology, he holds master’s degrees in Music History & Theory, Humanities, and Public Relations. He is the author of How to Play from a Real Book (2012), The Real Dixieland Book (2011), Jazzology: The Encyclopedia of Jazz Theory (with Nor Eddine Bahha, 2005), A Simple and Direct Guide to Jazz Improvisation (1995), as well as numerous articles on various aspects of music. Dr. Rawlins has performed extensively on flute, saxophone and clarinet in both jazz and classical venues.
Tom Quaile – BA, University of the Arts – Tom has played with many Dixieland bands in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area. Tom is in the family of entertainers, known as The Quailes. Tom and his siblings have worked together for over 50 years, with 10 years at their own nightclub, The First Fret Lounge. The Quailes have performed mainly in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area and have traveled to Reno and England. Including the Tuba, Tom is accomplished on other styles of brass horns.
